

Estes Park resident Betty Maitland died at her home Sunday morning November 9, 2014. She was 79 years old. Elizabeth Leiper was born October 21, 1935 in Escanaba, MI. Her parents were William and Harriet (Shepherd) Leiper. She attended Michigan State University, then transferred to Northern Michigan University in Marquette where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Elementary Education. While in college, Betty met Ronald Maitland. The couple was married on June 15, 1957 in Escanaba in a double ceremony with her sister Carol. Betty and Ron lived in several states as Ron was employed by the National Park Service, eventually moving to Estes Park in 1968. In Estes Park, Betty was active in the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies and PEO. Ron died October 18, 1998. Betty is survived by son William (Estes Park), granddaughters Sam and Michelle, son Robert and his wife Krislen (Loveland), granddaughter Kendra and grandson Garrett, and a daughter Karen Maitland (Scotland). She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister. A memorial service will celebrate Betty’s life Saturday November 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.
