Elsie Mae Reid, born March 8, 1940, passed away on January 18, 2023 at Northern Colorado Medical Center. She was 82. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Reid Perez, her niece and nephew, Michelle Reid Perez and Jonathan Reid Perez, their spouses, and their three children combined.
Elsie grew up in Colorado on farms around Weld County. She graduated from Greeley Central High School and then attended Colorado State College (now UNC), where she received a BA in Business Education with a minor in Math, and an MA in Business Education. Elsie was a business, computer, typing, and short-hand teacher at Contra Costa Community College outside of San Francisco in the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s. After moving back to Weld County in 1998, she volunteered at the Union Colony Exchange Club with the Committee for Scholarships, the Weld Food Bank, and the Community Outreach Center.
Elsie loved to travel. She went to Nigeria in the ‘70s and the Philippines in the ‘80s to visit her sister and family. Over the last 30 years, she traveled with friends and family to Austria, England, Egypt, Denmark, France, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, and Russia. In the U.S., she’s enjoyed gambling in Las Vegas and touring Alaska. She spent every Thanksgiving in Silver Spring, Maryland, with her niece, nephew, and sister; every Christmas with cousins in Colorado Springs; and every summer at Boyd Lake for the annual family reunion.
Elsie enjoyed playing mahjong and participating in book clubs at the Senior Center and Your Place Coffee. She also enjoyed reading novels and keeping up with political news. She was a fierce competitor at board games and a stickler for the rules. She enjoyed listening to classical guitar music, very dark chocolate, and very stinky cheese.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28 from 11am to 3pm at Boomer House, 1024 8th Street, in Greeley. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Weld Food Bank and the Union Colony Exchange Club in her honor.
