Born in Los Angeles, California to Dorthea Mauldin and Ernest Angell, Sr., on March 30, 1938, Ernie stayed busy throughout his childhood breeding hamsters, playing the clarinet, running cross country, and as a member of the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC). He was also Drum Major for his High School in the Rose Bowl Parade for multiple years.
After high school, Ernie served two years active duty in the US Navy on the U.S.S. Shangri-La. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Pasadena City College and the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA) where he met the love of his life, Janice (Chariton). They married on November 1, 1963. He went on to graduate from California Baptist Seminary with a Master’s in Religious Education in 1966 and Master’s of Divinity in 1968.
Ernie was ordained following graduation and began his journey as Rev. Ernest Angell, pastoring churches in California, Michigan, and Colorado throughout the 70’s and 80’s. In the mid-1980s, he helped to start Hope Ministries, a non-profit pastoral counseling ministry in Greeley, CO. Ernie served with Hope Ministries for nearly 20 years and provided counseling services to countless families and individuals, many of whom stayed in touch with him over the years. He was recognized by the American Association of Christian Counselors.
Along with pastoral ministry, being a father and a husband was one of the greatest joys of Ernie’s life. His son, Mark, was born in 1972 and a year later his twin daughters, Mellany and Linda. Ernie and Janice were their kids’ biggest fans, attending nearly all of their events and activities throughout their grade school and college years.
During Ernie's retirement, he and Janice enjoyed being outdoors and in nature as much as possible. They spent many summers camping and fishing, often joined by their children and grandchildren. If not in the mountains, Ernie could be found in his next favorite place, his garden. Tending his yard was his pride and joy, growing beautiful flowers and tasty vegetables, and tenderly caring for the local birds and squirrels.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Janice Angell; son, Mark Angell; daughter, Mellany (Tony) Archer; sister, Darlene Hermann; brother, Phil Angell; and four grandchildren, Emilee and Aubree Angell, and Aliyah and Jenayah Archer.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Linda.
A Celebration of Life for Ernie will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Allnutt Funeral Service - Macy Chapel, 6521 W. 20th Street, Greeley, Colorado, 80634. He will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
