

Esther Lee Maddox, 88, a resident of Spring Arbor, Michigan of 61 years, died Friday morning, May 25th, 2018 at Arbor Manor Care Facility in Spring Arbor, Michigan. Surviving is one sister, Ruby (Jack) Shupe of Greeley, Colorado; seven nephews, eight nieces and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces. Born the youngest of eleven children to Robert and Tollie Maddox near Sentinel, Oklahoma, October 14th, 1929. Esther went all twelve years to Sentinel Public School. She attended Central Christian College at McPherson, Kansas; Seattle Pacific University at Seattle, Washington; and received an MA in Speech and Theatre from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley, Colorado in 1956. She also did postgraduate work in theatre at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan.
For thirty-six years she taught in the area of Oral Communication at Spring Arbor University, directing plays, writing and producing readers’ theater, teaching many courses in public speaking and related courses. From 1977 to 1982 she chaired the Humanities Division at Spring Arbor University.
A member of the Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church for fifty-seven years, she served on the Board of Ministry, Finance Committee, Board of Stewards, Care Team, and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
Funeral services are scheduled for eleven o’clock at Generations (formerly Greeley Wesleyan) Church in Greeley, Colorado on Friday, June 1st, 2018. Contributions may be made to The Maddox Student Scholarship Fund of Spring Arbor University, Spring Arbor, MI 49283 or to any charity of choice, in Esther’s memory.
