Guy was born July 29, 1934 in Ft Lupton, Colorado to Guy Alvin Elliott, Sr and Mary E. (Posornow) Elliott.
He attended school in Ft Lupton, graduating from Ft Lupton High School in 1952. Soon after high school he began driving a truck for the Ft Lupton Canning Company and attended classes at Regis College in Denver.
On September 25, 1954 he married Jeannene Weigle and they made their home in Greeley.
Guy worked at Bachman’s and Nelson, Haley, Patterson and Quirk in Greeley as well becoming a Weld County Sheriff’s Deputy serving as their training coordinator in the 1970’s. He was very active in the Weld County Sheriff’s Posse at this time also.
Guy came from a Rodeo family heritage with Verne Elliott (owner of Hall of Fame Bucking Horse Midnight) being his cousin. It is no surprise that Guy elected to become more involved in Rodeo during the rest of his career.
He was appointed to the Greeley Stampede Committee in 1974 and was the General Chairman in 1978. For the Centennial year (1976) he helped with the televised 4th of July Celebration which was co-anchored with Walter Cronkite.
In 1981 he went to work for the City of Greeley as manager of Island Grove Park and in 1982 he became the Rodeo Manager for the National Western Stock Show in Denver, a position he held for 21 years.
After Guy’s career at the City of Greeley he moved to Colorado Springs and was the Director of Penrose Stadium for several years. Guy and Jeannene made Colorado Springs their home at this time.
After retiring from the National Western Stock Show in 2002, Guy immediately went to work at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo as the Rodeo Arena Director. He retired from San Antonio in 2018. During Guy’s time with San Antonio the rodeo was named Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year an astonishing 13 times.
Guy served as the Chairman of the Association of Rodeo Committees from 1995 to 2006 and served on the board for many years. He was also a member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Selection committee, representing rodeo committees for several years. He was a strong supporter and advocate for the PRCA, rodeo committees and this Hall of Fame. His motto was to try and implement change and policies and procedures to assist the rodeo in improving their overall production. So many people were touched by Guy’s rodeo knowledge and his mentorship. Several of his friends talk about his kindness and sincere love of the sport of Rodeo. He especially enjoyed working with the Cervi Family hauling their bucking livestock to multiple rodeos!
Guy attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greeley and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Being a father of two wonderful daughters and being a grandad and great grandad brought him such joy. He was especially proud of his two 1947 Willy’s Jeeps he drove around Greeley in. His most treasured memories were of all the horseback riding he shared with his daughters.
Guy is survived by his wife Jeannene, his daughters Jill (Steve) Forsythe, of Greeley, Jan (Lon) Anderson of Evans, a sister Mary Y Benjamin of Ft Lupton, a granddaughter Tiffany (William) Pimple of Denver and a great granddaughter Denise of Denver as well as a nephew Jeff (Deb) Benjamin of Lochbuie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
No service will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund in care of Allnutt Mortuary, 6521 W. 20th Street, Greeley, CO 80634. Condolences may be shared at AllnuttGreeley.Com
