He was born Feb. 8, 1924, in Donna, Texas to Faustino Herrera and Andrea (Salas) Herrera.
At 18, he joined the Navy and served during WWII from April 20, 1942, to Dec. 22, 1945.
He moved to Greeley in April of 1948 and worked for Wiseman Feedlot as a supervisor of operations for 14 years from 1948-1963. In 1963 he moved to the city and worked for Weld County Byproducts as a supervisor of operations for 10 years from 1963-1973. After that he worked for Monfort Pet Food Division as a supervisor from 1974-1980.
John married Cora Martinez in 1948 and she passed in 2003.
John is survived by three brothers and five sisters all of Texas; daughters, Peral Martinez of Brighton, Dorthy (Arturo) Orosco of Greeley, Andrea (Chris) Serna of Greeley, and Ruby (Lauriano) Rameriz of Greeley; son, John Herrera Jr. (Maria) of Greeley; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother, one sister, two sons and one daughter.
Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 28th St., Greeley, CO.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 4, 2014, at the First Assembly Of God, 3000 16th St. Greeley, CO.
