Joe attended Natrona County High School and Casper College in Casper, Wyoming. He was a proud United States Marine from 1979 to 1983. He served as a demolitions expert out of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Following the Marines, Joe had many interesting jobs from cab driver to medical courier to lineman. His current job was driving his beloved dump truck.
Joe is survived by his wife JoAnn Kidd of Greeley; son Dan (Amy) Deveraux of Firestone; daughters Brenda (Matt) Strom of Loveland, and Shelly Walkup of Nebraska; father Ray (Eva) Deveraux of Greeley; sisters, Mary-Kay (Roger Schmidt) of Windsor and Jann (Jeff) Demaske of Windsor. Joe had two nieces, Madeline and Elizabeth Demaske; nephew Benjamin Schrader; and six grandchildren, Mark Gitchel, Zack, Blake and Abby Strom, Paige Stark, and Leon Sybrant. Joe was not Grandpa Joe but affectionately known as Grumpy. Anyone that knew him knew the name fit. Joe is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother Kay; brother Bobby; grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Joseph was a character. He should have been born 100 years earlier. He loved everything outdoors – camping, fishing, and shooting. Camping was always an adventure with Joe. One camping trip he wrecked a dirt bike followed by Brenda wrecking the four-wheeler. He was always collecting some new piece of camping paraphernalia. He said “If you were going to go camping, you should do it right”. He went so far as to buy a camp oven to bake cookies and cakes.
Joe was an avid sports fan. He loved the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Rockies, and the Colorado Eagles. When Joe lost three fingers in an accident a few years back he wrapped his healing hand in purple and black gauze to root on his Rockies. Joe enjoyed teasing with his “claw”. He thought it was quite amusing to say “I can flip people off and no one knows”.
Joe loved many things – his family, Bud Light, listening to talk radio, his Marine Crops flag, his United States of America, and reading anything and everything. He loved to tell stories. You never knew if they were true or bull$#!*. Joseph will be dearly missed.
