A beloved and respected member of the UNC community, Kirk was the Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management, a position he held for nearly three and a half decades. Prior to arriving at UNC, he was the Manager of Construction for his alma matter, the University of Wyoming. In addition to his responsibilities managing a sizeable staff and budget, he oversaw the modernization of both campuses, spearheading the construction of numerous buildings. He loved all aspects of the construction process and was also a skilled craftsman, unfazed at designing, building, and remodeling projects large and small. Kirk valued frequent time spent exploring Rocky Mountain and Grand Teton National Parks and loved the beaches of Hawaii. He enjoyed time spent outdoors, cycling, hiking, and fishing, particularly in the company of his wife, kids, grandchildren, and his dogs. He never met a dog that did not want to be his best friend.
Kirk cherished his family and was fondly known as Grandad. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pam, three children and six grandchildren: Ryan and his wife Cortney and daughters Avani and Aspen; Amy and her husband Tony and children Gavin and Logan; and Cody and his wife Brielle and daughters Presley and Laramie; his brother Mark; and five nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Jean Leichliter.
A Celebration of Life to honor Kirk’s memory will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8th in the Panorama Room of the University Center on the UNC campus. The family asks that in lieu flowers those interested in making donations in Kirk’s memory please consider one of the following organizations: World Central Kitchen, the Surfrider Foundation, or Mile High Canine Rescue.
