Tom was the youngest of four children born to Kenneth and Maxine Lane on July 15, 1949 in Marshalltown, IA. He grew up in the small, very tight knit community of Green Mountain, IA. Tom worked many years at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown where he also met Stephanie Dailey who came from Rapid City, SD to also work for Fisher Controls. Tom and Stephanie were married in 1984 and moved to Scottsdale, AZ. They were blessed with two children – Sam in 1988 and Madi in 1990.
Tom obtained an Electrical Engineering degree from Arizona State University in December 1989 and started working for Sargent & Lundy, an engineering contractor for Arizona Public Service at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. In 1991 the family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to be closer to Tom’s family. Tom was an amazing stay at home dad for a year and then started working for Woodward Governor. After being laid off, he loved being a bus driver for the local school district for a short stint before beginning a career at Micro Motion in Boulder. Tom retired from Micro Motion in 2009.
Tom will be most remembered for his generosity and his love of family and friends – he never met a stranger. He loved Friday night gatherings in the cul-de-sac with the neighbors and spending many birthdays and holidays with family, related or not. Most of his spare time was spent gardening and attending activities with Sam and Madi. He wouldn’t think of missing any of these. He would frequently be found grilling hot dogs for the baseball team from the back of his truck in between games. Tom also enjoyed playing racquetball and softball for most of his life.
Tom is survived by his wife, Stephanie (Dailey) Lane of Fort Collins, CO, son, Sam Lane of Rapid City, SD, daughter, Madisen (Dana Mellage) of Fort Collins, CO; sister, Kenla Diane Lane of Loveland, CO, brother Richard Lane (Lynnette) of Ruidoso, NM, foster sister Patsy Gailey of Fort Collins, brother-in-law, Darrell Weitzell and several nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sally Weitzell.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 9, 2015, 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1005 Stover Street, Fort Collins, CO 80524 followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, First United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
