I will always have fond memories of Bill.  Few people in our lives are as genuine and honest.  My most favorite memory of Bill is when he would say the dinner prayer before a meal when we all got together.  I loved Bill's stories and the wisdom he always offered.  I pray your family's hearts will heal quickly with the knowledge that heaven has taken Bill home.

Bill was a fine person.  He will be missed.

Bill was a gentle giant of a man with a heart the size of Texas.  I remember when I was little Bill and Norma, Gale and Tarita,  along with the boyscout troup would come to Springer Lake to camp.  They would always call my Mom and Dad and let them know when they were comming and ususally it was very early in the morning.   They would come to the house and see us and I just loved them.   Through the years our families maintained a very close friendship and visited eachother when we could as my family lived in New Mexico and later some of us moved to Texas while the Nelson family lived in Colorado. Bill we know you are in heaven walking streets of gold so this is not goodbye.  See you later.  Love Penny and Della

I have fond memories of my cousin; he was so funny and so kind.  I remember one Thanksgiving we had a heavy snow storm and thought for sure that the family wouldn't make it to our house for dinner but late in the afternoon we saw headlights coming through the snow and there they were!   Stan told my Mom that a little bit of snow wasn't going to keep him away from turkey and sweet potatoes!   
 When I heard the sad news the other night I immediately envisioned him sitting at a kitchen table with his parents (my Aunt Kate and Uncle Bill), sisters Marjorie and Janie and "The Aunts"  they all have mugs of coffee in hand and are busily sharing stories and laughing so hard it hurts.
   He lived a life of honor; my deepest and sincerest sympathies go to the loved ones he left behind.   Carol Mandiloff Richard

Bill was my Scout Master, mentor and friend.  He was one in a million!  I was Senior Patrol Leader so Bill and I spent a lot of time together. What fun we had!  Once we built sleds for the Klondike Durby. They were cool but heavy.  We ended up winning more gold nuggets than any team thanks to Bill teaching us first aid procedures, smoking house rescue, starting a fire with flint, weird knots (Merchant Marine training) and basic survival skills.

I lost my retainer on a wilderness pack trip so Bill let me bribe the others to search in reward with candy I had packed for days.  Someone found it where I had jumped off of a rock.  Val Hummerickhouse and I always took candy into the wilderness area and after about three days the others would pay dearly for it.  I once carried a pop that Mike could not drink and ended up selling it back to him days later.

We went to his family place many miles north east of Ault.  It was spring and wet. By then we could drive and Doug Galloway had a car.  We went down a two track and stuck that thing to the axles.  We didn't want to experience Bill's "what were you thinking" look so we pushed and pushed until we got it out.  We were covered in mud and Bill just laughed when we returned.  In an earlier time, when we were there, we were working on merit badges like cooking and survival.  We learned how to grab some sleep when the ground is cold and hard.  Someones mom made a sheet cake and we had a case of pop.  We were going to leave that day so we all stuffed ourselves with sweets.  On the way home in the Black Beauty someone in the back seat made a "throwup noise" and half the car threw up all over Bill's car.  How did he endure this?

Scout camp was another of those fine experiences.  We had gone to retreat and left John Schultz to cook.  When we got back he was tied to a tree and the adjacent troop had "pine coned" him.  That started a war that lasted for a couple of days until Bill told us to stop.  Someone dropped their Nature Merit Badge book into the kybow. We held his legs while he retrieved it.  You cannot believe the crap we did and the liablity that Bill was under.

He was an innovator of recycling.  We filled his garage with newspapers for a money making project.  I mean really filled it up!  He ended up having to have the engine in the truck he had borrowed rebuilt.  That's the kind of guy Bill was.  Devotion to God & Country and a bunch of dorky little kids.

I can recall every moment with Bill.  Only he and perhaps Norma know why he devoted himself to Troop 58.  He believed he could make a difference and I am richer in many ways for having known him.  What fun we had! We used to laugh our brains out!  He was always teaching us something but it was never dull.  Up making coffee every morning and probably always wondering when we would shutup to go to sleep. We will miss his physical presence but he shall remain in many peoples' hearts forever!
