Alice Frances (Welch) White died at home after a brief illness on October 11, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The daughter of Thomas and Lillian Stacy Welch, she lived in Greenfield, Mass. through her early adult life. She was valedictorian of the Greenfield High School class of 1940. Alice met Herbert Alexander White at a Rainbow Girls dance, and they were married on May 29, 1941. Over the years, she lived in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Maryland, Illinois, Indiana, and Florida. Alice traveled to France, Switzerland, and England with her mother in the late 1960s. She also took her three sons on several camping expeditions, including a pop-up camper trip around Lake Michigan.
After more than twenty years of living in a travel trailer and touring most of the lower 48 states, Alice and Herb settled in Greencastle, IN in 1995. She was active in the Putnam County Senior Center serving through its meals for the elderly and food pantry programs. She also worked at the weekend pantry at St. Andrew’s Church. Alice delighted in attending concerts and campus events at DePauw University. In addition, Alice loved her sports- the Colts, the Cubs, the Pacers and the Flyers. After Herb died in 2004, Alice lived in Greencastle and Indianapolis.
She is survived by her three sons, Ned (Lois) of Grants Pass, OR; Richard (Carol) of Phoenix, AZ; and Bill (Pat) of Indianapolis, IN; as well as four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a niece and two nephews.
