Max E. Whitaker, 79, passed away on December 24, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was born on June 15, 1946, to James, Sr and Frances Crawley Whitaker. Max graduated from Rockville High School in 1964. After graduation he attended barber school and started his first job in Crawfordsville, but his career was interrupted by serving his country in the US Navy from 1965-1969. After being discharged from the Navy, he resumed barbering for 42 years in Greencastle, retiring from Max’s Barber Shop.
Max spent his retirement playing golf and was always helping others. He stopped by his moms every day for 25 years to have a cup of coffee. And he enjoyed having breakfast with the guys at the restaurant. Family was his main priority. He married the love of his life, Jeannette Johns, on June 15, 1968. They celebrated 57 years of marriage this year. Max had two daughters that he adored. He was always there for his family whenever they needed him. He was a proud grandfather and great grandfather- always attending birthday parties, sporting events and graduations.
Max was a member of the Brick Chapel United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannette. Daughters, Robyn Ganly (Rick) and Kellie Lowry (Mike). Grandsons, Connor Ganly (Lauren), Nicholas Ganly, and Michael Anderson.
