Althea Reid Crump was born on October 14, 1953 to Louise Brooks Reid in Charleston, SC. She was educated in Charleston public schools and graduated from Burke High School. She went on to pursue her collegiate studies at Claflin University. She graduated with a double degree in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education.
She married the late Jimmy Wayne Crump In 1980 and to this union was born a daughter, Jasmine Louise. After living overseas with her husband who served in the US Air Force, Althea returned to the US to reside in Greensboro, NC. She joined Mount Tabor United Methodist Church where she was a committed member of the United Methodist Women and was a faithful Communion Steward until her health began to fail.
She was employed by Moses Cone Hospital for 20 years as a nursing secretary. While there she was well known and well-liked by those who came in contact with her. She was known for her determination, dedication, and kind and gentle spirit.
Although Althea battled Sickle Cell all of her life she never let her illness get her down. She had strong faith in God and although she endured much she rarely complained and was always able to remain positive. Many of her co-workers and friends found that she was easy to talk to and confided in her.
She was preceded in death by her mother, husband, aunts and uncles.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Jasmine; brother Kenneth Reid (Stephanie) of Woodbury, Minnesota; aunt Dorothy Brooks of Charlotte, NC; father-in law Herman; sister-in laws Sharon (Lewis) and Sharal (Anthony); brother-in-law Rodney; nieces Autumn and Josephine of Woodbury, Minnesota; nephews, Zachary and Rashad; devoted friend and aunt Gail C. Tillman; lifelong friends, Doris Williams, Leatrice Johnson, both of Charleston, SC and Barbara Hayward, of Savannah, Georgia; the Brooks cousins; and a host of other relatives, and friends.
The family would like to offer sincere gratitude and thanks to all of her caregivers over the years including staff members at Wesley Long (primarily 3rd floor Oncology) and Moses Cone Hospitals, Guilford Health Care Center, Beacon Place, and Gail Crump.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Piedmont Heath Services and Sickle Cell Agency, 1102 East Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27401 in honor of Althea.
