

.Alwin Ludwig Shiem, 72, passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Alwin was born on January 12, 1943 in Paramaribo, Suriname. His family was always his passion and the time he could spend with them were his happiest. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many. He will be deeply missed by all.
He did internships in the Netherlands and Germany and started his professional career as a civil engineer building roads in the jungles of Suriname, South America. He was an avid badminton player and the Greensboro Badminton Club members were like his extended family.
He was preceded in death by his sister Edith Lui Kon Jean.
Those left to cherish precious memories include his wife of 48 years, Agnes Tjin A Soe-Shiem, son Randy Shiem and wife Kimberly, and three daughters, Debbie Walker and husband Brett of Greensboro, Cindy Sharpe and husband Robert of Burlington, and Brigitte Nguyen and husband Yung of High Point. He has eight grandchildren Brandon, Evan, Hannah, Renee, RES, Olivia, Aiden, and Andrew; and three sisters, Lucie van Ams, Sylvie Wong and Jenny Markiet; and two brothers, Orlando and Kenneth Shiem.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, 2:00 pm at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with Fr. Eric Kowalski officiating. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
