Mrs. Carlson was born in Richmond, Virginia on July 21, 1927, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Matthews Dickinson. She graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and moved to Greensboro to be a dormitory counselor and teach Spanish at the Woman’s College, now UNCG. After marrying Carl Carlson in 1949, they spent many happy years raising their four children on Shady Oak Farm and in their home overlooking Lake Higgins.
Anne founded Carlson Antiques in Greensboro with two friends in 1974 and ran the shop for more than thirty years. She loved discovering treasures in England and helping customers bring beauty and history into their homes. Anne had a passion for restoring houses and even moved two of them to a new location. She enjoyed friends from many experiences in her life and loved welcoming people for gatherings and celebrations. She embraced the possibilities of each day even during challenging times, and her sense of humor brought joy and laughter to those around her.
Anne was passionate about taking action to address needs in our community and started the Urban Ministry Food Drive in 1992. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, William Frank Dickinson and her husband, Carl Ivan Carlson Jr.
She is survived by a daughter, Katie Carlson Houston and three sons, Carl Carlson III (Emily), Steve Carlson (Anne) and Chris Carlson (Jennifer). She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Ashley Kaufman, Anne Wagoner, Richard Houston, Laurin Hardwick, Carl Carlson IV, Smith Carlson, Nancy Bailey, Marilyn Rush, Callie Reinikka, Anne Marie Carlson, Covington Carlson and eleven great grandchildren, one niece and 6 nephews.
