There will be a private family funeral on Sunday, April 7, 2013, followed by a Memorial Service at 1:30 at Temple Emanuel: 1129 Jefferson Rd., Greensboro. Following the service family and friends will be received at Well Spring Retirement Community at 3:30.
This wise and gentle man who cared deeply for his family, friends, community and religion, was born in Wilmington, NC, the son of Herbert Bluethenthal and Janet Weil Bluethenthal.
Arthur, a ‘reluctant hero’, was a B-17 Pilot in WWII, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, as well as a selfless servant to the Greensboro community who shied away from public recognition. He owned and ran the Greensboro Bonded Warehouse, which burned to the ground in 1970, after which he owned and ran the Pella Window and Door franchise for the state of NC. His community service resume ran the spectrum throughout the community. As a member of Temple Emanuel he served as Brotherhood President, President and on the Board of Directors. His devotion to the Jewish community was also seen in his involvement in the Greensboro Jewish Federation as the Drive Chairman and Vice President. His fundraising endeavors and community service projects for various charitable organizations also included president and board member of The Green Hill Art Gallery, the Drug Rehabilitation unit for Alcohol and Drug Services, member of the Guilford College Board of Visitors, board member of UNCG’s Weatherspoon Art Gallery, Campaign Chairman and President of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Greensboro and co-chair of the Community Relations Committee.
In addition to his parents, Arthur was preceded in death by his siblings, Mina B. Kempton, Joan B. Pomerantz and Herbert Bluethenthal Jr.
Arthur is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Joan, his three children, Ruth Bluethenthal-Appel of Philadelphia, Anne Bluethenthal of San Francisco, and Arthur Jr. (Tony) and Tony’s wife, Betsy of Greensboro. Also surviving are grandchildren, Mina Bluethenthal, Ben, Sarah and Jessie Appel, Shaun and Kate Bluethenthal, and his great grandson, Peyton Bluethenthal.
