Barbara Jane Barnett Weiss, 90, of Greensboro, died on January 15, 2019. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church Chapel. The family will receive visitors at the church after the service. A graveside inurnment at Forest Lawn Cemetery will follow at 3PM.
Barbara was born in 1928 in Gary, Indiana, daughter of Richard P. Barnett and Vivian Allison Barnett. She graduated from the University of Michigan and had graduate degrees from UNC-G. Barbara worked as a counselor at UNC-G for 35 years helping found the Continuing Education Center for Women and the Office for Adult Students. She focused on women’s education and career planning and advising non-traditional adult students returning to college. She was a tremendous role model and mentor in many women’s lives.
Barbara was married to Paul J Weiss, Jr for 58 years until his death in 2006. She is survived by her children Paul J. Weiss, III and his wife Cindy, their family Hannah and Greg Goldstein and Reid, and Ezra Weiss and Brianna Mannisse; Jane Burgess, her family Will Burgess, Amanda Vance and Ryder; Richard Weiss, his wife Lisa and daughters Sophia and Kristin; Mary Weiss and her husband Raimundo Langlois and children Raimundo, Mariah and Emma.
Barbara is also survived by her family in Florida, Leslie and Mark Wooten, Scott and Karen Weiss, Tracy and Ernesto Romero, and their families.
Barbara was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Greenbriar Garden Club, various book clubs and the Greensboro Chamber Music Society. She was formerly on the board of the Shepherd’s Center and worked extensively with Alzheimers caregivers.
She was widely travelled in Europe, Asia and South America and loved her weeks at Long Beach and in the Appalachian Mountains. She enjoyed visiting her children in New York City. She moved from her home of 55 years at 2406 Hawthorne St to WellSpring in 2007. She has continued and developed new friendships there that have enriched her life.
Barbara found beauty and joy in words. She sought knowledge her whole life and her spiritual journey was important to her. At the time of her death, she shared her insights with her family, who are forever grateful for her love and wisdom.
