March 8, 1935-April 26, 2025
Miss Betty. Mom. Nana. Granny. No matter what you called her, Betty Matthews was feisty, direct and deep down she truly loved you. Unless you pulled against her Duke Blue Devils. Only blood relation could save you then.
In her 90 years on this planet, she never backed down from a challenge. She didn’t care too much for her middle name so we won’t be sharing it here, but suffice to say young Betty Thompson probably heard it quite a bit growing up with two brothers in Salisbury, N.C.
Once grown, she married a master carpenter named Ed Matthews, who also built the micro midget cars she’d race occasionally. They had four children – Susan, Eddie, Judy and Patricia. Along the way she started two successive businesses. First she ran a daycare, and some years later she oversaw Southern Digital Watch Repair in Greensboro, N.C. She loved it there; perhaps most of all because her then-grown children worked with her. She’d spend 40 hours a week enjoying her family, while cutting up with regulars and new customers brave enough to enter. Her deep, warm laugh echoed down the hall.
She etched a spot only she could fill in our hearts and is now reunited in heaven with her husband and daughters Patricia Parks and Judy Moser. She is survived by daughter Susan Dixon, son Eddie Matthews, six grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
For those of us who knew her well, her memory is as close as the roar of a John Deere tractor, the smell of fresh cut grass or the taste of sweet tea after a hard day’s work.
Your hard day of work is done, Granny. Rest well. We love you.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407.
