Betty Gale Edwards Sikes, 92, died December 28, 2018 after a courageous battle with Mesothelioma. She was a native of Greensboro and a graduate of Greensboro Senior High School. She attended Mary Washington College and graduated from Guilford College. She was married to Dr. Edgar Sikes, Jr. for 66 years.

A celebration of her life will be at 2:00 PM Sunday at West Market Street United Methodist Church. The family will visit with friends in the Gathering Space following the service.

Betty Gale was an active member of West Market Street United Methodist Church as well as her circle and her Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Guilford College Art Appreciation Club, Book Markers Book Club, The Daubers, High Point Literary League, and Greensboro Lecture League and was a volunteer at Wesley Long Hospital for over 55 years.

Betty Gale was a charter member of the Greensboro Historical Museum Guild and has served On the Board of Trustees as well as a docent for 35 years.

She is survived by her children: Ms. Gale Sikes of San Francisco, CA, Tom (Eva) Sikes of Big Island, VA, and Nathan (Donna) Sikes of Summerfield, N.C. Also 5 grandchildren: Ian, Lee, Jonathan (Katie), Alex, and Rebekah, as well as 2 great granddaughters: Nora, and Callie. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Mary Anne Sikes, of Greensboro and her sister-in-law Ms. Rhea Sikes of Washington Island, WI.

She was predeceased by her husband, her parents Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Edwards, and her 2 sisters, Kaye Carter and Christine Christie.

During her extended illness, many friends offered comfort and care to Betty Gale, including Grey Wood, Mary Jane and Jerry Armfield, Mary and Mike Smith, Frances and Jim Stanford, and Lynn and Barry Alexander, Irene Rhodes, Beverly Johnson, Kate and Nathan Hayes, and the dear couple down the street, Donna and George Lawson, who surprised Betty Gale when they started bringing her newspaper from the street to her front door! Rain or shine, they did this for years. What a thoughtful and caring gesture to get Betty Gale’s day started. She really appreciated each of these special friends so very much.

The caregivers from Home Instead were especially loving, considerate, and comforting during Betty Gale’s last months of life and BG’s immediate family loves each and every one of them as they were godsends providing such great and constant support. The family is also so very grateful for Hospice whose service and dedication is beyond expression in mere words.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Legacy Fund at West Market Street United Methodist Church, 302 West Market Street, Greensboro, N.C. 27402-0870 or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.

Betty Gale was one of my favorite people. My wife and I were distressed that we could not attend her celebration of life , especially since she celebrated life every day. She was one of the most dedicated volunteers at the Greensboro Historical Museum when I was Director and her influence is a legacy. Her enthusiasm was contagious and she will be sorely missed.
