God called our wonder of a mother, Lt. Col. Bonnie Louise Hallman USAF (ret.) to light up heaven on February 4, 2022. Her family surrounded her as she went home. She was born on November 20, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois to parents John and Gertrude Barker. They preceded her in death. She graduated from Madison West High School in 1964, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968 where she proudly wore the letters Pi Beta Phi. She joined the United States Air Force after college and became the first non-health care female officer at the United States Air Force Academy. She retired after 24 years of service as the top-ranking woman in the state of Nebraska.
She married the love of her life, Col. Jerry A. Hallman, USAF (ret) in 1986. She loved living with him at the beach on Hilton Head Island and then in Gulfport, Florida. Her heart broke when he preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, as she called us: her eldest, Jennifer Carney Noble, her middlest, Christine Louise Carney and her littlest, Julianne Catherine Carney. She is also survived by her grandchildren in whom she took huge delight: Jackson Connor Noble, Avery Caroline Noble, Piper Carney Noble and June Louise Carney. By a pandemic miracle, we all live in Greensboro, NC. She is also survived by her cherished sisters, Barbara Jean Anderson (Hal) and Betty Lou Ball (Tom), all of Lincoln, Nebraska. She has 7 nieces and nephews who adore her and many great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her step-children, Kimberly Busby (Bob), Jeff Hallman (Jo), and Stephani Wyatt (Jeff) and grandchildren, Brooke, Jason, Brandon and Jessica.
Our mom would become your favorite as soon as you met her. Her granddaughter, Avery, says that her voice could be heard throughout the house, but her presence could be felt miles away. She filled our lives with pure light and joy, like a spotlight of love. When she cheered for you, you felt it all the way to your toes.
When Bonnie finally learned to text, she began sending her family Bible verses every morning. Her last verse was “What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who believe.” (I Cor. 2:9).
Please join us for a celebration of her life at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 12 at 10:00 am. To livestream the service, go to www.westpreschurch.org. She will be laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her honor to the Servant Center where she volunteered caring for homeless and disabled U.S. veterans in Greensboro, NC. 1417 Glenwood Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27403 (336) 275-8585, www.theservantcenter.org.
