Charlotte Speagle Royal, 98, was reunited with her husband in Heaven on April 6, 2018. She died peacefully in the comfort of her home, as was her wish, surrounded by her family. A service to celebrate her life will be at 2 PM, at Westminster Gardens Mausoleum, on Monday, April 9, 2018, officiated by Reverend Joe Parker. The family will receive friends in the mausoleum beginning at 1 PM prior to the service.
Mrs. Royal was born in Catawba County to the late Samuel Ruffin and Essie H. Speagle and was one of 8 children. Six siblings have preceded her in death. She moved to Greensboro in 1940 with the hope of experiencing city life and was employed as a seamstress with Blue Gem. While playing softball on the company team she met William Edsell Royal, the third base coach for the competitors, whom she married and celebrated almost 50 wonderful years of marriage before his death in 1991. Charlotte had an energetic love for life and was always seeking ways to have fun. Growing up in the era that she did, she had a brave, determined (stubborn!) and independent spirit, but maintained her sparkling laugh and animated sense of humor. Charlotte was insistent on a meticulous lawn which was beautifully adorned with a vast array of NC wildflowers. She was a gifted baker and possessed a talent for crafting, especially painting. Her large family was the center of her life.
She is survived by her children, Judy R. Venable of Greensboro, Eddie (Joann) Royal of Kernersville, Donald (Sherry) Royal of Jamestown, and Teddy (Luann) Royal of Stokesdale; grandchildren, Michael (Kathy) Venable, Eric Venable, Travis Royal, Amy (Mike) Collins, Brad (Stacy) Royal, and Brian Royal; seven great grandchildren; three great- great grandchildren; sister, Faye Hoke of Lincolnton; and several nieces and nephews. She loved her cockatiel, Baby Bird, and her caretaker’s canine companion, Otto, who she affectionately referred to as Baby Dog.
Mrs. Royal’s family extends their heartfelt appreciation to her caregiver, Rita Broni, of Griswold Home Care, for her love and gentle, compassionate care, Dr. Elizabeth Barnes and the staff of Eagle Physicians at Guilford College for their thoughtful professionalism, the volunteers of Mobile Meals with Senior Resources who not only delivered nutritious meals to Charlotte but friendship too, for over 23 years, and her neighbors for their support and kindness over the years.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Mobile Meals/Senior Resources of Guilford County, POB 21993, Greensboro, NC 27420. Online condolences may be offered at www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com. Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel is assisting the family.
