
Donald Irving Spencer peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 12, 2019, surrounded by his family. Don was born December 1, 1928 in Lexington, NC, son of W. I. and Allene Spencer. A Memorial Service will be held at Starmount Presbyterian Church on January 17, 2019 at 2:00 pm. Family will greet friends and visitors immediately after the Service in the Fellowship Hall.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara Lee Spencer; brother, Stephen Thomas Spencer (Nancy) of Isle of Palms, SC; daughter, Lea Spencer Kirkman (John) of Greensboro, NC; son, Donald Irving Spencer, Jr. (Caroline) of Knoxville, TN; four grandchildren whom he cherished: Spencer Kirkman and Lashley Kirkman; Carson Spencer Popkin (Lee) and Taylor Spencer Livingston (Wes); and four great-grandchildren.
Don was a graduate of High Point High School and with honors from North Carolina State University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Textiles. He served in the United States Army as First Lieutenant in the Korean War. He began his career with Burlington Industries and served as Executive Vice President of Serta Mattress Company for 35 years before his retirement.
Don was an active member of Starmount Presbyterian Church for the last 58 years serving as a Deacon and Elder. Throughout his life, Don has been faithful in serving others through Mobile Meals, Urban Ministries, Senior Resources of Guilford County, Senior Leadership Greensboro, Guilford County Mental Health Association, to name a few. Everyone found Don to be a caring, loving, and helpful man whom people would quickly call a friend.
As a longtime member of the Wolfpack Club, Don supported both the athletic department and the scholarship programs for those financially needy students. Don was an excellent tennis player and won several doubles tennis titles at Greensboro Country Club while he was a member. After his knee problems, Don took golf back up and always enjoyed his “Wednesday” golf group.
The family would like to thank Cone Health Palliative Care and Beacon Place for their loving care to Don and their assistance to the family.
