Born in Greensboro, NC to the late Frank B. and Arzie Schrum Routh, Mrs. Carter was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. She graduated from Haw River High School and attended the High Point School of Nursing. When the nurses held a Christmas party for soldiers in the Army Air Corps stationed at Pope Field, she met Glenn Carter, the Pennsylvania Yankee who was to be her husband for 56 years.
Though she used her nursing skills for a while, Mrs. Carter eventually turned her attention to retail, working with her husband at Eckerd drugstore. She later utilized her sewing skills providing alterations to customers at Belk, where she retired. The Carters moved in 2008 from their home in Greensboro to Pennybyrn at Maryfield retirement community in High Point.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn C. Carter.
She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Lackey (Joe), and Iris Carter; grandchildren Janet Lackey, Jason Lackey, Elizabeth S. Steele (Daniel), and Brice Schoolfield; and great-grandchildren Kelsey Steele and Jackson Steele.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wildlife Conservation Network (wildnet.org/other-ways-give) or to the Guilford County Animal Shelter.
