Dr. Stuart D. "Stu" Allen passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, at the age of 75 in his home. Stuart was born on February 15, 1950, in Pitman, New Jersey. His idyllic childhood in Pitman was characterized by playing catcher in little league and a solid work ethic that started early when he manned his own paper route at the age of twelve.
Stuart moved south in 1968 to pursue his undergraduate education at Wake Forest University. After graduating from Wake Forest with a BA in Economics, he taught high school for one year at Andrews High School in High Point, NC before moving to Charlottesville to pursue his Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Virginia.
Stuart joined the faculty of the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1976, where he taught macroeconomic principles and the MBA Macroeconomics course. Known as "Stu" to all his colleagues, he was one of the most beloved faculty members the Economics Department has ever had. While he published over 30 articles in top-ranked journals over his career, his real impact on the University was through his teaching and service. He won the University Alumni Teaching Excellence Award in 1982, the Bryan School Outstanding Faculty Award in 1985, and the MBA Association's Faculty Excellence Award in 1995. He was known for challenging his students to rise to the occasion, and for handwriting that became the stuff of legend.
Stuart served as Head of the Department of Economics for 20 years, from 1993 to 2013. During the first three years of his tenure as Department Head, he also served as Director of Graduate Studies. Over the course of his leadership, he secured two endowed professorships in economics and oversaw the creation of a Ph.D. program. He also chaired the University Residence Appeals Committee, the Bryan School MBA Admissions Committee, and the UNCG General Education Council, and served as Liaison to the Lloyd International Honors College.
Upon his retirement in 2017 after 41 years of service, Stuart's former students and colleagues created the Stuart D. Allen Scholarship in his honor. His legacy lives on through the thousands of students he challenged and inspired, and through the department he helped to build.
His legacy is one characterized by faith, community, and service. At First Baptist Church in Greensboro, he served faithfully as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher for many ages, and Finance Committee Chair. He also loved coaching his kids' soccer teams from the time he started with the Little Angels to the Strikers and the Twisters. After being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease over 25 years ago, Stuart met the challenge head-on. He became an active member of the local Parkinson's community. While he was still able, he would get up each morning to train with Prince at ACT by Deese before work, and his friends at Rock Steady Boxing affectionately referred to him as "Calculator Stu." Despite the challenges of his disease, he remained committed to fighting back every day.
Stuart enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and nowhere did he like spending time more than on the golf course. He and Teresa were a formidable pair over the years at many bridge nights against friends. He loved spending time with his kids watching sports, joining a bowling league with his boys, or a Scrabble marathon against his daughter. He was enormously proud of his grandchildren and loved hearing the latest news on how each excelled in the classroom, and how they competed on the soccer field, volleyball court, baseball diamond, dance stage, and basketball court.
Stuart is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Teresa Benditz Allen; his children, Jeff (Maya), Ginny (David), and Brian (Courtney); grandchildren Jake, Crawford, Mila, Madelyn, and Juliette; brother Curt (Cindy) and family; sister-in-law Frances Bennett and family; brother-in-law John Benditz and family; and extended family Braden Banner (Luke and Ivan) and Brendan Needham.
The family would like to thank the loving caregivers at Authoracare Hospice and all of Stuart's private caregivers over the last several years.
Services will be held at 2pm on Sunday, February 22 in the Lineberry Center at Hanes Lineberry, 515 N. Elm Street, Greensboro, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Stuart D. Allen Scholarship at https://bryan.uncg.edu/give or contributions can be made to First Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC.
