Reed was the son of the late William H. Stone, Jr. and Helen McNaull Stone.
He is survived by brother, William H. Stone III, sisters, Dianne Norton and Lynn Chafin, nephews, Andrew Nesbit, William H. Stone IV, Mark Chafin, Nick Norton, Chris Chafin and Sam Chafin, niece, Stéfania Hiltgen, great nieces, Lilly Hiltgen and Mackenzie Chafin, and great nephew, Maxwell Hiltgen.
A 1970 Grimsley High School graduate, Reed attended East Carolina University for two years where he excelled academically and played on the university golf team before being drafted into the Army. While stationed at Fort Collins, Colorado, he served as a medic and was a golf pro.
Reed struggled with mental illness but was still known for his honesty and kind nature to others throughout his life. He was a marvelously talented abstract artist who used his paintings as art therapy to manage his mental health. His art served as a vibrant expression of both his passion and his struggle. He lived his life as a loving and loyal son, brother, and uncle who, despite his many challenges, displayed good intentions with determination and tenacity to move forward.
A Celebration of Reed's life and Committal Service will be held in the Memorial Columbarium Garden at First Presbyterian Church, Fisher Park Circle, Greensboro, NC 27401 on Saturday, September 13 at 2:00 with an art reception to follow immediately in the Blair Hagan Room.
