A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 28, 2014, in the Chapel at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. The family will receive friends following the Memorial Service.
Eleanor was born on April 2, 1924, in Roxboro, NC. She was the youngest of the eight children of Samuel Garland Winstead and Kate Barden Winstead. Following the example of her seven siblings, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After her graduation, she moved to Greensboro where she worked as a caseworker for the Children’s Home Society.
In 1948, she married William Owen Cooke, a Greensboro native who practiced law in the family firm Cooke & Cooke. She devoted her life to her family and friends, was an avid golfer who achieved three holes in one over her lifetime and was known at family gatherings for her Charlotte Russe cream-and-ladyfinger dessert.
Owen passed away in 2010. Eleanor is survived by her son, Barden W. Cooke and his wife, Terri T. Cooke, and her son, William O. Cooke, Jr. and his wife, Jane E. Perrin, as well as four grandchildren, Christina E. Cooke, Laura O. Cooke, T. Perrin Cooke and William W. Cooke.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Eleanor’s memory to the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, 604 Meadow St., Greensboro, NC 27405
