An 11 AM Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 in the Richardson Auditorium at the Well Spring Retirement Community, where she lived, with a reception to follow. Pastor Bernie Hess of 1st Lutheran Church, where Elizabeth worshiped, will officiate.
Elizabeth was born in Macon, GA to John Broadus Edwards and Anna Belle Kenney Edwards and was raised in Saluda, SC where she also retired. She earned both Bachelor and Masters Degrees in nursing from Emory University. She gave 23 years of nursing service as a navy veteran and most extensively with the Public Health service retiring with the rank of Captain. She retired as the Deputy Chief Nurse at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD.
Elizabeth was the consummate caregiver within the family and during her career. Her servant’s heart, capable hands, nursing skills, organization, and leadership were shared with others throughout her entire life.
Elizabeth had a myriad of interests with family always being her top priority. She put many a fine family feast on the table. She was known far and wide for her yeast rolls, peach pickles, cheese strudel, and cheesecakes. Elizabeth loved to garden and fresh flowers always were to be found in her home.
Elizabeth was also a quiet, humble lady. The family children adored her and she was there for many of their births and was the one the children always wanted to come stay with them. She was like a grandmother to Jay and John Kirkpatrick; Chris and Kelley Erb; Kathryn Erb Punke; and Tyler Cooper.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents; sister, Frances Edwards Erb; nephew, Kenney Smith; and great nephew, John Kirkpatrick.
Survivors left to cherish her memory are nieces, Jane Kirkpatrick (Jim) and Elizabeth Lane “Laney” Cooper and nephews Harley E. Erb, IV (Donna) and Stan Smith.
The family would be remiss not to include a special thanks to the wonderful team of health professionals at Well Spring and the many others in that community that meant so much to Elizabeth. Dr. Ted Manny, Dr. Katherine Tabori, and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro provided great medical care and encouragement throughout her illness.
In lieu of flowers, Elizabeth would be honored if memorials went to Caldwell Academy Capital Fund, 2900 Horse Pen Creek Road, Greensboro, NC 27410.
