
Elizabeth Malone Roughton, born Elizabeth Morrison Malone on January 29th, 1917, in Gadsden, Alabama, died on March 31, following a brief illness. She was the daughter of The Reverend Edmund Lucien Malone and Alice Tye Morrison.
She attended Grenada College in Granada, Mississippi and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1939 where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Alpha Kappa Gamma Honorary Society. She was also President of the Women’s Association, a member of the Playmakers Theater, and listed in Who’s Who of American Universities and Colleges. She received the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award.
Elizabeth married John Turner Roughton in 1939. They lived in Morganton and
Thomasville, North Carolina, where she was active in many civic and social organizations, serving often in North Carolina Episcopal Diocesan events.
She and John moved to the Wellspring Community in 1993. She was predeceased by him in 1999. Living in Greensboro, she was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the North Carolina Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
Elizabeth was the beloved mother of three children, John Brooks Roughton (Gail) of Yuba City, California, Jane Roughton Kearns (Tom) of Darien, Connecticut, and Lucien Malone Roughton of Durham, North Carolina . She is survived by eight grandchildren, Gray and Selena Ellison of London, England; Lucien and Jane Ellison of Wilmington, North Carolina; Emmy and Peter Sattler of Los Angeles, California; Brooks Roughton of Castle Rock, Colorado; Hayes and Max Honer of Newtown, Pennsylvania; Michele and Lucien Roughton of Durham, North Carolina; Kate and Justin Carboneau of Durham, North Carolina and Tom Roughton of Brooklyn, New York. She was great grandmother to 14.
Elizabeth was a rare soul who was dearly loved by generations, and had scores of life-long friends. Her positive attitude and self-effacing good humor were inspiring to all who were fortunate to know her.
There will be a funeral service at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Columbarium
on Sunday at two o’clock in the afternoon.
