Ernest Stevenson “Steve” Harvell, born son to the late Ernest N. Harvell and Kate Harvell passed away January 28th, 2025. He was preceded in death by his sister Lyndia and brother Roger. Steve was born into a wood working family thanks to his father Ernest Harvell.
Ernest built Liberty Ships in Wilmington, North Carolina during WWII. A former partner in Pegram-West, Ernest started Harvell’s Woodworking in Greensboro, North Carolina in the 1960s. Steve and his older brother Roger bought the company from their father in the 1970’s, working together until the mid-1980’s when Steve established E.S.Harvell Inc.
During Steve’s fifty year career as a craftsman he designed and built custom millwork for some of Greensboro’s finest homes and businesses. His work took him to Indiana, New York, West Palm Beach and Texas.
The Harvell's worked for years building fine millwork and handmade furniture inspired by English antiques alongside Otto and Henry Zenke. After spending long hours on the job, Steve continued his work at night by bringing home table and chair legs to hand carve as the evening passed. Steve worked day in and day out to provide for his family, never truly knowing what a day off was, even on vacation.
Mr. Harvell loved building things. After his retirement you could find him in his workshop watching his beloved Westerns while putting together pieces of furniture; always eager to keep his mind busy.
Steve wanted the best for his family and friends alike and if he could help, he would. Having grown up in a time where a strong handshake sealed a deal, he always followed through on a promise. He was a true friend to those that had the pleasure of knowing him and if he bestowed a nickname upon you, you knew that you were truly loved.
Steve is survived by his wife Vickie, with a marriage that lasted 50 years. Steve will be greatly missed by his three sons, two daughters, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his sister, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of life gathering will be held from 2-4 p.m., with a brief service with Military Honors and reflections at 3:15 p.m., Sunday, February 23, in the Lineberry Center at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro.
