

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, October 11, 2013, at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery, with Rev. Jeff Clauson officiating.
Mrs. Atkins was born in Leaksville, NC, to the late James Andrew Bailey and Clara Esther Herndon Bailey, on December 31, 1937 and was a member of Zion Christian Church, in Burlington. Estelle was raised in Caswell County by her two grandparents, Andrew Jackson and Laura Frances Bailey. Estelle lived over twenty years in Burlington, where she raised her two children, Linda Lavern Smith and Samuel Keith Smith while married to Billy Gordon Smith. She later moved back to Greensboro and resided there for twenty-four years, along with her second husband Earl Dean Atkins. Estelle graduated from Thomas Health Care and Instruction Center Inc. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant, working with various private healthcare providers, such as Eldercare, Quality Care, Kay’s Home Healthcare, and several other reputable organizations. Estelle loved the beach. Feeding the seagulls and looking for shark teeth were two of her favorite pastimes. She was loved by so many and will be missed by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Samuel Keith Smith; her second husband, Earl Dean Atkins; and her three sisters, Lorene Bailey of Caswell County, Lois Brewer of Greensboro, and Irene Hudson of Greensboro.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Lavern Smith Thompson and her husband Lindale of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Crystal Thompson Overton and her husband Corey of Chocowinity, NC, Samuel Jacob Smith and William Avery Smith, both of Elon; two great-grandchildren, Caleb Christopher Overton and Chloe Jade Overton, both of Chocowinity, NC; daughter-in-law Jamie Smith Gregory, (formerly the wife of Samuel Keith Smith); her first husband and father of her children, Billy Gordon Smith of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Thursday evening October 10, 2013, at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 High Point Rd., in Greensboro.
