Gene was born on September 17, 1934, in Robeson County, NC, to the late Willie R. and Effie Maynard. Gene joined the US Army in 1954 and was discharged in 1956. From 1961 until his retirement in 1993, he worked for Nabisco as a sales representative where he was a consistent high achiever and was well-respected by colleagues and customers. After retirement he continued working part time at Maynard’s Welding as a fabricator with nephew John Maynard until his health declined in recent months. He was a lifelong active member and Sunday school superintendent of Aycock Fellowship Ministries on S. Aycock Street (formerly First Pentecostal Holiness Church). Throughout his lifetime he remained a faithful servant to his community of family and friends, and was respected and loved by all those who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Bracy Maynard, Max Maynard and E.C. Maynard. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jane Maynard; son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Debi Maynard; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Tim Hunnicutt; brothers, Bobby Maynard Sr. and Tracy Maynard; sisters, Etta Mae Lowry, Eunice Wallace, Betty Ledbetter, and Callie Hopkins; grandchildren, Christian and Justin Maynard, Katherine, Jessica and Gracianna Hunnicutt, and Hayden Hunnicutt Putnam, and great- grandchildren, Aiden and Aria Putnam.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, 4:00 p.m. at Aycock Fellowship Ministries. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be held on Tuesday, 11:00a.m. at Guilford Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Youth Department of Aycock Fellowship Ministries, 1036 S. Aycock, Greensboro, NC 27403 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
