

Flora McIver Cox Clegg – loving wife, mother, grand-mother, great grand mother, sister and aunt died on October 9, the birthday of her beloved husband, Neill. Flora was 95 and enjoyed her long life to the fullest. Her enduring optimism and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone that knew her.
Her life will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 12, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend David Partington officiating. The family will receive friends following the service during a reception in the Virginia Gilmer Room.
Flora was born in Rowland, NC to the late Charles Arthur and Lelia McIver Cox. Her father died when she was eleven years old and her mother relocated the family to Carthage, NC. Flora graduated from Carthage High School where she played basketball and tennis. She continued her education at Women’s College in the music program where she studied piano, an interest and love inspired by her mother. Her life changed course while in school when she learned of the need for nurses in the Army. She studied nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC and served as a nurse in the Army in Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina. In 1947 she married her childhood sweetheart and best friend, Neill Clegg, and they moved to Chapel Hill where she continued her schooling at UNC. Neill’s career in accounting brought them to Greensboro in 1960. They joined First Presbyterian Church where she taught 1st grade Sunday school for many years.
Flora was a loving and devoted companion to her husband and mother to her four children. She was very proud of her Scottish heritage and was a Tar Heel through and through. Flora loved the beach and she and Neill shared many, many memorable vacations there with their children and grandchildren. Flora enjoyed volunteering and helped at the Cerebral Palsy School, Mobile Meals, Wesley Long Hospital, and the Community Service Group at First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her children and their spouses: Keevie and Bob Martin, Neill and Victoria Clegg, Jr., Charles and Vickie Clegg, and Russ Clegg and Angie Smits, all of Greensboro; grandchildren Cate Martin Rhodes and spouse Dave of Greensboro, Kelly Martin of Greensboro, Chad Clegg and spouse Heather of Virginia Beach, VA, Alex Clegg of Washington, DC, and Audrey Clegg of Greensboro; great grandchildren Tyler and Grayson Rhodes and Emma and Annie Clegg; sister, Catharine Kirby of Richmond; and numerous nieces. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Alton and Charles Cox.
The family would like to thank her long-term caregivers and Hospice of Greensboro for their exceptional attendance of Flora.
