

She was born April 27, 1922, to Ida Falls Styers and Thomas VanBuren Styers (the seventh of nine children) in Kings Mountain, N.C.
Frances and her family moved to Greensboro when she was five years old. She graduated from Greensboro Senior High School and Women's College. Upon graduation, she began working at Bur-Mill (Burlington Industries) where she met her future husband, Joseph L. Perkins, Jr. Joe and Frances had their first date in July, 1945 and were married October 13, 1945, They celebrated 64 years of marriage when Joe died October 23, 2009.
Burlington Industries moved them to Asheboro, High Point, Cedar Falls, Burlington, Dothan (Alabama), Greensboro, Harriman (Tennessee), back to Greensboro, back to Burlington and they retired in
Greensboro in 1979. While raising her family, Frances was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, President of the PTA, Girl Scout Cookie Chairman, MYF Assistant Director, choir member and later Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Christ United Methodist Church. She was an active Circle member, a charter member of the Sharing Group, served on many church committees and was a member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service.
Frances was President of the Greensboro Soroptomist Club, active in the Greensboro Charity League, The Dogwood Garden Club, and Greensboro Business Woman's Club. She and Joe were members of 3 dance clubs. Frances was a licensed real estate agent who sold real estate and later managed the Century 21 Real Estate School in Greensboro. She worked as a personal secretary to the president of Gilbarco, and later worked in the office of Development at Elon College raising funds in Rockingham, Randolph and Guilford Counties. She finally retired in 2000.
Frances shared her 90th birthday, Saturday, surrounded by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph L. Perkins, Jr., her sisters Ethylene S. Shelley, Isabel S. Wright, Alda S. Bryan, Edna Lillian Styers and brothers Thomas V. Styers, and W. Harold Styers.
She is survived by her son, Joseph L Perkins, III and wife Ann of Cary, daughter Jeanne F. Perkins of Greensboro, two grand-daughters Alison P. Wood and husband Jeremy of Greensboro, Jennifer P. Kranz and husband Troy of Cary, brothers Edward L. Styers and wife Dene of Greensboro, Frank C. Styers and wife Polly of Morehead City, and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, May 4, at 11:00, at Christ United Methodist Church with the Reverend Susan Norman-Vickers presiding. Visitation will follow at the church.
