Frank Montgomery Fowler, Jr., age 89 was ushered into heaven in the predawn hours of August 13, 2024 at Beacon Place. Frank’s previous cancer diagnosis had metastasized and was diagnosed in March of this year. Frank was born to Frank Montgomery Fowler, Sr. and Marion Heisel Osborne Fowler at 6:10 am on Friday, November 23, 1934, the youngest of three children born to Frank and Marion.
Frank loved and often reminisced and regaled stories of being raised in a log cabin on Ferry Road in Danville with his paternal grandmother living right next door. Frank graduated from Schoolfield High School in 1952 and entered the Air Force in 1953. Frank left the Air Force on December 9, 1956 and patiently waited fourteen days to marry the love of his life, Nancye Gauldin. Following the marriage, Frank entered the elevator business in 1957 as Assistant Vice President of Westbrook Elevators and continued in elevators until his retirement in 1999. To serve his community, Frank became a scout leader and later joined the Danville Life Saving Crew in 1968, the latter becoming an association which quickly became one of his greatest joys. He became a Master Mason in 1971.
If asked to describe Frank, everyone would say that he was a Christian that personified morals, manners, respect for others, patience and character. With an enormous loving heart, Frank could always be counted on by his friends and family for love, support and advice. Frank was a very social man that never met a stranger. His smile and infectious laugh pulled you right into his conversation. Frank especially enjoyed traveling. Anywhere and everywhere. If you mentioned a trip, his response was always “I was ready yesterday”. Frank embraced the great outdoors and would spend every available minute out of doors camping, walking the dogs, driving, or working in his shop with all the windows and doors open. Frank was above all else a family man loving and welcoming three children into his family along with a multitude of fur babies of the canine persuasion. Frank was a man of many talents. His passion for repairing and refinishing antique furniture began early and eventually developed into the talents of a master craftsman. Frank filled his home, and his children’s, with his beautiful handmade furniture crafted to perfection. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather that will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 68 years Nancye Jean Gauldin Fowler of the home; his daughter, Kymme Fowler Hoyle (David); his son, David Alan Fowler of Summerfield; his granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Fowler of Whitsett; and his daughter-in-law Teresa Fowler (daughter – Amy and granddaughters Cassidy and Leah) of Summerfield.
Frank was preceded in death by his son James Stanley Fowler of Summerfield and his sisters Marion Marie Colenda of Oxford, North Carolina and Dorothy Anne Fowler Daniels McDaniel of Danville, Virginia.
