Born on December 12, 1949, in Greensboro to Bruce Hicks Sr. and June Hicks, Bruce—affectionately known as “Bubba”—was guided by a strong sense of service and community. He graduated from Grimsley Senior High School before serving in the United States Coast Guard. His commitment to public safety continued through his work as a Captain of the Guilford College Fire Department #17 and as a Deputy Sgt. with the Guilford County Sheriff's Office. Later in his career he worked in sales, at TIMCO in Stores, Cass Jewelers as a Watchmaker and at Forest Oaks C.C.
Bruce had a warm spirit and quick wit that endeared him to many. Whether through his professional roles or personal connections, he was always ready to lend a hand. His love extended deeply to both people and animals alike.
An enthusiast of aviation, hockey, and history, Bruce found joy in learning and sharing his passions. He was also a proud member of Greensboro Masonic Temple Lodge 76 and MESH 771, who embraced those values of integrity and brotherhood throughout his life. He also was a member of The York Rite Bodies, Scottish Rite Bodies and a Shriner.
He is remembered with love by those who knew him best: his brother Chuck Hicks; sisters Penny Conners (David) and Jenny Taylor (Doug); nephew Zack Tucker (Charlotte); niece Abby Taylor; stepson Joseph Bettini; grandniece Mara Tucker; lifelong friends Dona Zimmerman-Miles, James von Cannon and many others whose lives were brightened by his kindness and humor.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce Hicks Sr. and June Hicks, as well as his sister Cheryl June.
A Memorial Service will be held on January 17, 2026, at 2:00 PM at WhiteStone Masonic Chapel, 700 South Holden Road, Greensboro, North Carolina, followed by a reception afterward at WhiteStone.
A special debt of gratitude to his WhiteStone community friends that embraced him and all of the staff at WhiteStone that served him to the end.
Special thanks go out to the Tucker family for embracing his beloved dog Roxie into their Pack, and shout out to decades of staff at Gene’s Barber Shop on Spring Garden for keeping that red hair in check.
A special thanks from his friends and family goes out to his sisters Penny and Jenny, known by him as “The Bosses”. Their unwavering love and guidance gave him much strength through any stormy times, and for that we are all so very thankful.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor to Greensboro Masonic Temple Lodge 76 or The Humane Society of the Piedmont https://www.hspiedmont.org/donate are encouraged.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire acts of service, compassion, and joy. May his soul soar to heights he never imagined possible and beyond.
