Born on June 13, 1936, Gary was the son of the late William Franklin and Fannie Estelle Clodfelter Gantt. He grew up in Statesville, N.C., graduating from Statesville Senior High School – where he was a proud member of the track and wrestling teams. After graduating from Mars Hill College, Gary and Doris moved to Greensboro, N.C., where they would raise their children and he would complete 35 years of employment with Duke Power as Superintendent of Power Apparatus and Transmission Maintenance.
Gary was a busy man during retirement- spending his time with an equal mixture of athleticism and fun. Gary served as past-president of the Greensboro Running Club and completed many marathons, such as the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington, D.C. and Isle of Palms Marathon in S.C. Gary soaked up nature’s beauty while fly fishing for smallmouth bass. Gary was an avid collector of pocketknives and making whittling canes. Never to be still for long, he also enjoyed pedaling his cycling bike and being a member of the Swinging Stars Square Dance Club. Gary was a faithful servant to his church – serving as an usher, substitute Sunday school teacher, and on various committees.
Gary and Doris loved to travel - some of their highlights include Hawaii, Alaska, and various countries in Europe – especially the history filled streets of Germany, Switzerland, and France. Of all the places they were fortunate enough to go to, his favorite spot was the sunny, sandy shore of Myrtle Beach. Gary and Doris owned a “beach place” at Pirateland Campground for many years, where they made memories for a lifetime with their family.
To his last breath, Gary exuded God’s goodness and brought joy to everyone around him. He will be immensely missed by all who were blessed enough to know him.
Gary is survived by his wife of 67 years, Doris; his son, Randy Gantt (Rosie) and his daughter, Robin Covington (Ben); his grandchildren, Kevin Shotwell (Amy), Candace Baker (Jake), and Casey Covington; his great-grandchildren, Bentley and Badin Baker.
