Grady Daniel Edwards, “Dan” to family and friends in North Carolina, was born to Grady Willis Edwards and Vermell Marshall Edwards on June 11, 1935, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Grady was the third of six children born to Grady and Vermell. He spent summers working on family farms and loved to recount the adventures of his early childhood in the depression and World War II era, along with his time at Sumner High School and Guilford College in the 1950’s. In school, Grady excelled academically and athletically. He played football, basketball and baseball and was involved in several student organizations, such as Beta Club. He was active in his church, Centre Friends Meeting. He graduated from Sumner High in 1953 and graduated from Guilford College with a bachelor’s degree in 1957. Grady worked for General Electric in Schenectady, New York, upon graduation. Not long after, he was hired by Jefferson Standard Insurance Company (later Jefferson-Pilot, now Lincoln Financial), and returned to Greensboro. During his long career with Jefferson-Pilot, Grady moved to several cities and states, before being transferred to Northern Virginia, where he met his beloved, Evelyn Sions, a teacher. They married on June 24, 1978. Son Brian was born in 1980. Not long after, the family moved to the Atlanta area, settling down in Lilburn, Georgia, where daughter Jennifer was born in 1982.
Grady and Evelyn raised their children in Georgia. During this time Grady and his family spent weekends hiking in nearby Stone Mountain Park and visited family frequently. Grady enjoyed practicing sports with his children and attended their school activities. He continued to follow college sports on television and attended Braves games. Grady retired from Jefferson Pilot / Lincoln Financial in 1999 after a long and successful career. After retirement, Grady and Evelyn enjoyed trips to the mountains. They traveled to visit family often. Grady cherished time with his granddaughter, Gabby. In July 2021, Grady and Evelyn moved from Lilburn, Georgia to Cypress, Texas, to be near daughter Jennifer.
Grady is survived by son Brian Edwards (Angela), as well as daughter Jennifer Jablonsky (Matthew), granddaughter Gabrielle (Gabby) Jablonsky, and many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. Grady is preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn, and siblings.
The family would like to thank the amazing and devoted staff at Parson’s House Assisted Living in Cypress, Texas, as well as the Bayou City Hospice, for their loving care of Grady.
