

Dwight was born in Lexington, N.C. on October 8th , 1922 to the late James Nathanial Lanier and Nona Micheal Lanier.
Dwight and his five siblings grew up on the family dairy farm in Welcome just outside of Lexington. When he graduated from highschool he moved to Greensboro and worked at Carolina Hatcheries on Battleground Avenue where he met and married his loving wife Annie Mae, August 21st 1943.
Shortly thereafter World War II broke out and he joined the US Navy. With training he became an Electrician’s Mate Third Class. While he was stationed on the ship Fisk it was torpedoed and sank. Fortunately, he survived and lived many more happy years with Annie Mae. They were able to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary before she passed away on August 31, 2018.
After the war Dwight returned to Greensboro to work again at Carolina Hatcheries. He worked many years there until it closed. At that point he finished his career at Guilford Mills in Greensboro.
Dwight was preceded in death by his wife Annie Mae Simmons Lanier; his sisters Emogene Cope and Peggy Phelps of Lexington; his brothers Wayne Lanier and Jim Lanier of Lexington.
Dwight is survived by his oldest brother Ralph Lanier of Dobson. Also surviving are his daughter, Brenda Hiatt and husband John of Greensboro; daughter Pat Mills of Greensboro; son Henry Dwight Lanier Jr. (H.D.) and wife Tracey of Eden. Granddaughters, Jan Walters of Greensboro; Jennifer Staley and husband Dwight of Greensboro; Teresa Foster and husband Mike of Arizona; Grandsons, Billy Mills of Greensboro, Jamey Lanier, Christopher Babcock and wife Laura, David Babcock all of Eden. Dwight has eleven great grandchildren and eight great, great grandchildren.
