Horace was born July 3, 1926, and was raised in Colfax and Greensboro. At the age of 18, he answered the call of his country and joined the US Navy Seebees in the 145th Construction Battalion, and was sent to Okinawa in the war effort in the Pacific Theater. After his honorable discharge, he worked as a prison guard, like his father. Later he became a heavy equipment operator delivering coal (truck driver). He was a longtime member of Bessemer Baptist church.
Horace was predeceased by his parents, Joe C. Stanley and Ruby Beeson (Walker) Stanley, and all of his siblings. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Shirley Jean Stanley; two grandsons, Richard Vernon Powell and Mitchell Brewer; and great-grandson, Joe Lee Powell.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407.
