A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at First Baptist Church in the chapel, 1000 West Friendly Avenue, officiated by Dr. Steve Pressley. Interment will follow in Westminster Gardens Cemetery, 3601 Whitehurst Road.
A Raleigh native, Jean was the daughter of Hubert McDonald Rhodes and Ora Lee Stallings Rhodes. She graduated from the Woman’s College of North Carolina (now UNCG) with a B.S. in Secretarial Administration. She was a member of the Alumni Association as well as The Vanguard. Following her retirement from McDaniel Lewis and Company, Jean devoted extra time to reading, a favorite past time since childhood, spoiling her pets and bird watching. She discovered a talent for ceramics as well as cross-stitching. Traveling, dining with the neighborhood Eating Out Club, and visiting home bound members of First Baptist Church were other pleasures.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arren Gray Ayers and her brother, Hubert Rhodes, Jr. Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Barbara Ayers Best and husband Tom Best of Greenville NC, Thomas Gray Ayers and wife Susan H. Ayers of Asheboro, Nancy Rhodes Ayers of Greensboro, and her grandson Thomas Gray Ayers, Jr. and wife Jennifer Colpitts Ayers of Alexandria, VA.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., in the Parlor at First Baptist Church.
Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to Morris Animal Foundation, 720 South Colorado Boulevard, Denver, CO 80246 or to First Baptist Church, 1000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401.
