A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel with Minister Vonda Sampson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home until 9:00 p.m.
Born in Clinton, NC to the late Eddie and Rossie Sampson, Jimmy was of the Christian faith. He proudly served his country during The Vietnam War, serving in the United States Army, earning the congressional Silver Star. Also, while serving in Vietnam and sustaining several gun shot wounds, Jimmy was still able to take out a sniper’s nest on a hill that had his fellow soldiers trapped below, earning him his military retirement and the honorable Purple Heart . He graduated from Sampson High School and then from North Carolina Central University, where he earned his degree in Economics. Jimmy also retired from State Farm Insurance after 20 plus years of employment. Needless to say he had a very strong work ethic. He was a people person who never met a stranger. Jimmy was loyal to a fault and had the heart of a saint. When he wasn’t making people laugh he was enjoying his favorite music or watching an old western movie. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will always be remembered as “The Last Man Standing”. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Christine Lamb and Elizabeth Ashford and 3 brothers, Jerome Morrisey, Maceo Sampson, and Milford Sampson.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Glenda Sampson; daughters, Rhonda Sampson, Vonda Sampson, and Shanlyn Stevenson; step-daughter, Donielle Ruff; brother, Eddie Sampson, Jr. and his wife Frances; brother-in-law, Bobbie Ashford; grandchildren, Marshall Sampson, Kejuan Reeder, and Kamari Reeder; nieces and nephews, Macerine, Gale, Tony, Earl, Tessie, Brother, Jerome, Michael, Angela, and Diane; and numerous extended friends and family.
Cards and other expressions of condolence may be sent to Glenda Sampson at 2207 Meloine Lane, Greensboro, NC 27407.
