

Greensboro - Joan Hunt Cochran, age 92, of Friends Homes West died on January 28, 2015. There will be a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31 in the living room of Friends Homes West conducted by Father Mark Menees, Vicar of St. John's Anglican Church. The family will receive friends afterward. A private family inurnment will be held in the Columbarium of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church preceding the memorial service.
Joan was born in Greensboro on September 2, 1922, to the late Louise Marsh Hunt and Thomas Cook Hunt and was a lifetime resident, with Guilford County ancestors dating back to the early 1700s. She was educated in Greensboro at Greensboro Senior High (Grimsley) and Woman's College (UNC-G). She worked at the IRS for two years prior to her marriage to Thomas R. Cochran, Jr. They were married for seventy years.
Very active and athletic, Joan strongly encouraged her four daughters to participate in sports. She tirelessly drove them to swim practices and swim meets. There were family tennis games, summer camping, hiking and water-skiing at Philpott Lake. She served as her daughters’ Girl Scout Troop Leader for many years.
Family was a large focus for Joan. She stayed connected with her extended family through visits and hosting holiday gatherings. She was always ready to bake a cake or make brownies to take to sick or grieving friends.
Joan was passionate about encouraging people young and old in growing their faith. She loved her Lord and made sure her family regularly attended church services and other church functions as well as summer religious retreats. Daily family devotions were a must in the Cochran household. She was a Young Life Campaigners' Group leader for several years. Joan worked on the committee that brought the Bible Study Fellowship courses to Greensboro and she served as a BSF Discussion Leader for six years. Church membership included St. Andrews Episcopal, St. Francis Episcopal, Holy Trinity Episcopal and most recently St. John's Anglican Church. While at St. Francis, Joan made her Cursillo and attended a Reunion Group for many years.
Other memberships during Joan's lifetime were Greensboro Junior League, Greensboro Country Club, Town & Country Garden Club and Wednesday Morning Book Club. She was also active in the Greensboro Christian Women's Club.
Following the Civil Rights sit-ins at Woolworth's, she served on the Greensboro Human Relations Commission. She was a Reading Connections tutor, and she and Tom served with a H.A.V.E group repairing houses for low income owners.
Joan was predeceased by her sister, Kay Hunt Youngblood of Greensboro. She is survived by Tom, her loving husband; four daughters and their husbands; Sally Cochran Wilson (Charlie) of Jamestown, NC, Joanie Cochran Legette (Jim) of Greensboro, Debbie Cochran Proctor (Steve) and Ann Cochran Culley (Dave) of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren: Scott Wilson (Kristi) and sons Graham and Reid of Raleigh, NC; Brooke Wilson of Decatur, GA; Glenn Legette of Greensboro; Wade Legette (Ann) and sons Wade and Jim of Greensboro; Louise Proctor of Austin, TX; Christine Proctor of Atlanta, GA; Harris Culley of Atlanta, GA; Sam Culley of New York, NY, and Andy Culley of Athens, GA. Also surviving are sister Cam Hunt Bell (John) and brother-in-law Curt Youngblood of Greensboro and several nieces and nephews and their children.
