Joel Fleishman

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Temple Emanuel, 1129 Jefferson Rd., Greensboro with Rabbi Fred Guttman, Rabbi Andy Koren, and Rabbi Eli Havivi officiating. Burial will be private.

Joel was born in Fayetteville, NC on February 11, 1937. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill as well as a member of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. Joel lettered as the student manager of the UNC 1957 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship team. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from UNC in 1958.

He served his country in the United States Air Force Reserve and was called to active duty during the Cuban missile crisis in October 1962.

Joel married Linda Elfmon of Fayetteville, NC in 1960. After completing a two year executive training program at Filene’s in Boston, they moved to Greensboro in 1963 where he was the proprietor of Fleishman’s Clothing at Summit and Friendly Shopping Centers for over 30 years. In 1996, he started a made-to-measure men’s clothing business that continued until his death.

Joel was committed to the Greensboro community. He was past president of the Temple Emanuel Brotherhood and past president of the Greensboro Sports Council. He also served on the boards of Greensboro Kiwanis, Greensboro College Board of Visitors, and Starmount Country Club.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents W. Edward and Dora Steinberg Fleishman, brother Herman Sender Fleishman, and nephew Scott Matthew Fleishman. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Linda Fleishman; son and daughter-in-law Dr. Craig and Sandy Zabel Fleishman of Orlando, FL; son and daughter-in-law Adam and Wendy Berkowitz Fleishman of Chicago, IL; five granddaughters: Emily, Ashley, Sydney, Sawyer, and Sabrina Fleishman; brother Harvey Fleishman of Fayetteville; brother and sister-in-law James and Sandra Fleishman of Fayetteville; sister-in-law Audrey Fleishman of Charleston SC, mother-in-law Lillian Elfmon Kent of Boca Raton, FL; sister-in-law Shila Elfmon Baer and her husband Richard of Raleigh; and five nephews.

The family expresses profound gratitude to Dr. Brad Sherrill, Dr. Stacy Wentworth, and the entire team at Cone Health Cancer Center, as well as to his hospice nurse Tracy Carpenter and his caretakers at Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Cone Health Cancer Center, Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, CaringBridge, Temple Emanuel, or Hadassah.
