

John was born on January 10, 1946 in Oshkosh, WI. After graduating from Oshkosh West High School in 1964, he attended the University of Wisconsin. He joined the FBI in 1967 and retired after 35 years of exceptional service. “Foots”, was “one hell of a” Special Agent with the FBI in Wisconsin, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. He was a very humble, dedicated agent with many proud accomplishments.
John met his wife and best friend, Karen, in high school. Jack couldn’t resist Karen’s laugh & charm. They were married on January 21, 1967. John and Karen had 4 children: Shannon, Jennifer, Shelly, and Carrie.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Marion (Allender) McCarthy, his brothers Tom and Jim, and his daughter, Jenny.
He is survived by his wife, Karen (Ruprich) McCarthy; son, Shannon (Trish) McCarthy of Mars, PA; daughters, Shelly (Jim) Haas of Cleveland Heights, OH, and Carrie (Brad) Ivey of Greensboro, NC. John is also survived by his 7 loving grandchildren, Delaney and Mary Ella McCarthy, Egan, Cormac, and Rowan Haas, and Kelsey and Paige Ivey.
John was a loving husband, father, Papa, and close friend to so many. He loved his family, grilling, gardening, an occasional IPA, and the Green Bay Packers. More than anything he loved playing with his kids and grandchildren, and going to the beach with his Sweety Karen. He will be dearly missed, but his pranks, wit and loving spirit will be carried on by his family.
A memorial service will be held at First Lutheran Church at 3600 W Friendly Ave in Greensboro, NC at 2pm on Saturday, September 4, 2021 followed by a casual reception at Haines Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401 for family and friends.
Donations may be made in his honor to the Society of Former Agents of the FBI Scholarship Fund, 3717 Fettler Park Drive, Dumfries, VA 22025; or to the First Lutheran Church of Greensboro, NC Endowment Fund.
