
A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 5, 2010, at Saint Pius X Catholic Church in Greensboro, followed by interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Joe was born in Troy, N.Y. and served in the Navy during the Second World War. He graduated magna cum laude from Siena College and married Jane Ann Powers, who was also from Troy, N.Y. He started his career with General Electric in upstate New York. He later moved to Westfield, NJ to work in mid-town Manhattan for Macmillan publishing where he became executive vice president and a director. Moving to Greensboro, NC in 1975, he joined Cone Mills and to become chief financial officer. He was elected to the board of directors in 1979 and was appointed as vice chairman. He retired in 1988.
During his career in Greensboro, he dedicated his time and energy to the community. He served as a trustee of Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, a board member for the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Association and was deeply involved with the establishment of Delancey Street in Greensboro. He was one of the founders of the Well-Spring Retirement Community and worked diligently to create the St. Francis Springs Prayer Center.
Joe was a member of the Board of Trustees for Siena College and established a scholarship program at Siena which has provided education grants for students with financial needs.
Pope John Paul II honored him and his beloved wife Jane as a Lord in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He and Jane also were honored as recipients of the Francis Medal from the Franciscan Friars.
Surviving are his daughters, Marcia Bond Boyle and husband, William, of Wellesley, MA, and Louise Bond O'Berry and husband, Jeffrey, of McLean, VA.; sons, Joseph Francis, Jr. and wife Elizabeth, of Allendale, NJ, and John Matthew and wife, Alicia, of McLean, VA; sister, Anne Marie Patterson and husband, Eugene of Pawleys Island, SC; and his 12 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis Springs Prayer Center at 477 Grogan Road, Stoneville, NC 27048.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel.
