Perhaps the reason why I still remember this event that happened 62 years ago is that it was so bizarre to me that I would ever get into a wrestling match with Les, as he was a really lovable guy but not a “rough and tumble” type.  In any event, while he won the wrestling match, I did manage to get “revenge” by edging him out at the closely contested the tryout for becoming drum major.

I will miss Les very much, and will think of him often.

I would like to share some things about my longtime friend, Les Hermelin, who was a friend of mine since high school.  Les was always a warm, open person with a good heart.  He was a great guy and a great friend, and I will always feel great affection for him.  

Les and I were members of a group of 6 friends who played poker on a weekly basis during high school and thereafter we all kept in touch and would have annual reunions when we would get together in different cities, together with our spouses.  We always included a poker game at each reunion.  Les would always bring the poker chips and would act as the banker, and he was a very good poker player.  I could never figure out what he had in his hand, whether he was bluffing or whether he had winning cards.  He usually wound up being among the winners.

In my senior year in high school, I decided to try out to be the drum major in our high school marching band.  Les was also a member of the band and he decided to try out as well.  In order to prepare for our drum major auditions, we both took a baton-twirling course during the summer before the beginning of our senior year.  The course was held in a grassy area between two buildings at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.  Suffice it to say that, notwithstanding the baton-twirling course, neither one of us has been enshrined in the Baton Twirlers Hall of Fame.  We were very good at throwing the baton up into the air, but catching it when it came down was quite another matter.  On one occasion, when we arrived at the designated grassy area and found that, unbeknownst to us, the class had been cancelled for that day, we somehow got into a friendly wrestling match. I don’t remember how that happened; it just did.  I do remember that I couldn’t stop laughing throughout the match and that at one point, when Les had managed to get on top of me, he said “now you’ve got 190 pounds on top of you!”  (continued on next page of memory...)

I got to know Les when he volunteered in Cardiac Rehab at Moses Cone. He was outgoing and friendly with everyone. Always positive and upbeat. I will remember his big smile and caring manner.  My thoughts & prayers to all his family & friends. He will be missed!

Please accept our most sincere condolences. Les was one of the nicest people I’ve  ever known. Our participation in the Cleveland Heights High School Marching and symphonic bands was an amazing experience for all of us.

I’m deeply saddened to hear of Leslie’s passing. Such a sweet and caring person with a loving family too. 

So very sorry to hear this. I volunteered for many years with Les at Moses Cone Cardiac Rehab and always enjoyed our monthly get together luncheons at Panera. He will be missed.


Marcia, Julie and Stacey, I can’t begin to tell you how much this hurts my heart. Your dad was one of my most favorite people in my life. And your mom. He was so sweet and so funny.
