Margot Hammond Cunningham died peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Well-Spring Retirement Community at the age of 90. Margot was born in Greensboro on July 22, 1935, the second child of Margaret Edmunds Hammond and Philip Conrad Hammond, Sr. She graduated from Greensboro High, St. Mary’s College, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After graduation from college, she worked at Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. In 1959, she married Charles Decatur Cunningham, Jr., also of Greensboro, and they raised four children.
She is survived by her children, Charles (Kristin Palm) of Ypsilanti, MI; Carrington Tarr (Jake) of Washington, DC; Louise Rambo (Tim) of Charlottesville, VA; and John (Jennifer) of Greensboro; grandchildren, Evan, Cate, and Laney Tarr; Margot and Ashley Cunningham; and Jacob and Lucas Rambo; nieces, Margaret Booth Baddour, Helen Hammond; nephew Philip C. Hammond, III; and great-niece Helen Baddour Touloupas. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her brother Philip C. Hammond, Jr.
Margot led an active life, volunteering and participating in numerous organizations and clubs, including serving as President of the Debutante Club of Greensboro and on the board of the Greensboro Opera. She was a member of the Friday Afternoon Club, Wednesday Afternoon Book Club, Junior Dogwood Garden Club, Historical Book Club of North Carolina, Junior League of Greensboro, The Assembly, and The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. She was a devoted volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Margot was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church until her marriage, when she joined the First Presbyterian Church. She and Decatur loved to travel with family and friends. She was an avid walker, gardener, bridge player, and tennis player (with a strong forehand).
Besides her devotion to family, Margot lived a life full of friends that she cherished, from childhood ones to those she met along the way. She was well-known for her sweet, gracious disposition toward all, a curiosity for others, and a great sense of humor. One of the highlights of her years at Well-Spring were her weekly dinners, where her prodigious memory for names was a much-appreciated resource in conversation.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of AuthoraCare Hospice, Well-Spring Health Care, and especially the wonderful caregivers of Skilled Care Hall 2.
Her life will be celebrated at 2 PM, Friday, March 27, 2026, in Virginia Somerville Sutton Theatre of Well Spring Retirement Community, 4100 Well Spring Drive, Greensboro, NC 27410. The family will receive friends following the service in the Special Occasions Room.
