

Marguerite Verdier Wettstein passed peacefully on January 26, 2024, at Friends Home West Senior Living Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was 92 and preceded in death by her husband, Rev. A. Arnold Wettstein, and daughter, Deborah Louise Staton (James Brooks Staton, III). She is survived by sons Theodore Arnold Wettstein (Emily Hoofman Wettstein) and John Frederick Wettstein (Eve Elise Wettstein). She has two grandchildren by Deb, Jennifer Staton Kreick (Kyle Kreick) and Jon Calvin Staton (Russela Bunce Staton), and four grandchildren by Ted, Mary Jane Mason (Elliott), Nick Wettstein, Emily Wettstein and Sophie Wettstein, and six greatgrandchildren Caroline, Eleanor, Clara, Pippa, Lou Lou and Colby.
Marguerite Verdier Wettstein was born July 31, 1931 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the third of three children by William E. Verdier and Edna Bausman Verdier. Her parents, elder sister Elizabeth Zellers (Rev. Emlen Zellers) of Lancaster, and elder brother William E. Verdier, Jr. (Edith Huber Verdier) of Fairfield, Connecticut, all predeceased her. She is survived by four nieces including two, Julie Zellers Keets and Margaret (Margie) Zellers Simonetti, of her sister’s daughters, and two, Katherine Verdier and Susan Burnett, of her brother’s.
Marguerite, called Peggy in her youth, graduated from Lancaster’s McCaskey High School in 1949 with a reputation as a skilled violinist and equestrienne, and from Wilson College in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She married the young minister Arnold Wettstein on June 4, 1954, and raised a family in New York, Ohio, Florida and Montreal. They settled in Winter Park, Florida when Arnold took a position with Rollins College and Marguerite was welcomed as a member of the Rollins Women’s Association. She started her second career as a biological technician at the University of Florida Agricultural Research Center in Apopka.
Her hospitality, loyalty and smile will be missed by family, colleagues, and friends, including the family of caregivers that Marguerite befriended when she moved to Greensboro and lived in Abbottswood at Irving Park and in Friends Home West.
A memorial service for Marguerite Wettstein will be held at Knowles Memorial Chapel, Rollins College, at 10:30 am on Monday, March 18, 2024, with parking available at the Truist Parking Garage, 131 E. Comstock Av, Winter Park, FL.
