Marie Levy Gould peacefully passed away at Beacon Place on May 21, 2013.
A funeral service will take place on Thursday, May 23 at Beth David Synagogue at 12 Noon. Burial will follow at the Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery.
Marie was born in Casablanca, Morocco to Chaim and Solica Malka Levy on January 5, 1920, the fourth of seven children. Her father was a textile merchant, her mother a midwife and herbal healer. Marie enjoyed a traditional Sephardic childhood and related many stories of her youth to her children and friends. She attended L'Ecole Francaise and was fluent in French and Arabic. After the early passing of her father, she helped her mother support the family, by working in the Levy's Turkish baths.
Marie was an expert seamstress. In 1943, she and her brother Prosper were working in a shop making custom shirts, when a young man came in, needing some clothing. His name was Maryan Leopold (Paul) Gould. Having been discharged from the French Foreign Legion and unable to return to war torn Vienna, he was kindly invited to Marie's home. They were married on September 30, 1944.
Their children, Sigmund and Lillie, were born in Casablanca, Morocco. Marie and her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1950, enduring a two week transatlantic voyage. They ultimately settled in Queens, NY, learned to speak English and became naturalized citizens. Marie lovingly cared for her family and was an excellent homemaker. Her family always came first.
When her children grew older, she worked as an expert fur designer and finisher at a top NYC fur salon. There was nothing she could not do with needle and thread. And she was an equally talented cook and baker, melding the cuisines of Morocco and France. Every meal was thoughtfully prepared and always delicious.
After their retirement in 1983, Marie and Paul moved to Greensboro, NC. Marie enjoyed her grandchildren and volunteering. She made challahs for Beth David Synagogue and helped wrap gifts for Hadassah. She enjoyed visiting Lillie and her family on Long Island in the summer, taking sewing classes at GTCC, going to EMF and swimming with Paul at the YMCA. She, especially, loved making Friday night Sabbath dinners for her family.
Marie will be lovingly remembered by Paul, her husband of 69 years, sister Marcelle Elkaim, and children Siggie (wife, Joan) and Lillie Erdheim. Her grandchildren Rebecca Levin (husband, Todd), Jason Gould (wife, Meganne), Michael Gould (wife, Jenny), Jessica Erdheim and great-grandchildren Hannah, Aidan, Avery, Charlie and Raina.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405 or Beth David Synagogue, 804 Winview Drive, Greensboro, NC 27410.
