

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at the church.
Mary was born in Kinston, NC to the late William Josiah Nicholson, Jr. and Mamie Hines Nicholson. She was valedictorian of her class at Grainger High School in Kinston and a 1959 graduate of Duke University where she was a Phi Mu and sang in the Glee Club and Chapel Choir. Mary worked as an elementary school teacher for the NC public school system for over 20 years and volunteered as a tutor after her retirement. Her husband John and she were very active in Marriage Encounter ministry for many years. During her lifetime, Mary also resided in Belhaven, NC, Farmville, NC, Beaufort, NC and College Park, MD. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
Mary enjoyed reading, Duke basketball, watching her “programs” and solving crossword puzzles. She also was fond of NC beaches and global travel. Most of all, she loved spending time with her husband John and the rest of her family who will miss her very much. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, neighbor and friend to many. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William Josiah Nicholson, III. She is survived by her sisters, Peggy Harris of Reston, VA and Molly Canuette and her husband Chris of Kinston, NC; her children, Tol Broome and wife Pam of Greensboro, Laura Harper and husband Steve of North Potomac, MD, and Mimi Cockerham and husband Greg of Cary, NC; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Baker and husband Michael, John Broome III, Marianna Broome, Joe Harper and wife Meghan, Sarah Harper, Susan Harper, Thomas Hillyard and Peter Hillyard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Discretionary Fund, 609 N Greene St., Greensboro, NC 2401; or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro,2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405 in memory of Mary Nicholson Broome.
